GE Centricity Pharmacy Expansion Project

Description

The GE Centricity Pharmacy Expansion project replaced the previous pharmacy information system at the Victoria General Hospital (VGH) and the Grace Hospital (GH) with the Regional Pharmacy computer system currently used at St. Boniface General Hospital (SBGH). The new system will maintain the day-to-day pharmacy operational and clinical activities and support the goal of improved patient safety. The pharmacy data for each hospital will be stored in one secure location and backed up and maintained by Manitoba eHealth.

Benefits to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy personnel

  • Ability to interface with the site’s ADT system
  • Standardized label output – reduction in the number of different labels
  • Streamlined working processes (e.g. view past patient history, no re-indexing)
  • More time for pharmacists to focus on patient care
  • Inventory module (e.g. online inventory information)
  • Ultimedex – for drug interaction checking

Benefits to hospital support staff and administration

  • Regional standardization of pharmacy processes and support across sites
  • Improved efficiency in upgrading/configuration of the system

Future Benefits

  • Building the foundation for the electronic patient record and Computerized Provider Order Entry(CPOE) system
  • Ability to support future PYXIS technology
  • Fax Connect – nurses and doctors can fax drug orders directly to the pharmacy
  • Lab interface will populate lab data within GE Centricity patient profile
  • Ability to add more WRHA pharmacy sites to the same regional GE Centricity database
