Working with health care professionals to build an electronic health record

A major benefit of the provincial program will be the ability to create a provincial electronic health record, a secure and private lifetime record of key health history and care for each person within the health system in Manitoba.

The record will be designed to be available electronically to authorized health care providers and the individual anywhere, anytime in support of high quality care. This approach represents a key step in a provincial strategy that is designed to address many of the current challenges facing the province.

Manitoba eHealth works directly with health care professionals to plan, design and build the systems that will lead to a provincial electronic health record.

The purpose of Manitoba eHealth is to provide support and solutions that will lead to a province-wide electronic health record, expected to be developed within three to five years. Manitoba eHealth was formed to leverage the resources of eHealth Services, an existing division within the WRHA. Manitoba eHealth represents recognition that the method of building disparate systems on different platforms is counter productive.

To date, eHealth Services has accomplished much including:

  • Development of a multi-year Information and Communications Technology (ICT) strategy
  • Establishment of a Provincial Electronic Health Record Steering Committee.
  • Development of Enterprise Architecture in parallel with the ICT Strategy.

Much work has already been completed or is about to be introduced which has helped to lay the groundwork for Manitoba's Electronic Health Record Project. More detailed information is available below.
