EMR Adoption Program
Health Minister Theresa Oswald announces Manitoba’s EMR Adoption Program.
(official news release)
More information about the EMR Adoption Program will be available in November.
In the meantime, please contact the Primary Care / Community Physician Information Systems (PCIS) Office at PCISOffice@manitoba-ehealth.ca.
- The attached interactive electronic medical record (EMR) worksheet was developed by Dr. Chris Burnett. It includes cost assumptions for basic and optional technology components that reflect Dr. Burnett’s own experience and the EMR system he uses.
The worksheet allows you to input factors that apply to you and your clinic (i.e. number of workstations required) to estimate a rough cost for your situation. However, be aware that this is only a rough guide and before purchasing any product you should do a full analysis (with the help of a physician peer leader if you wish).

- Another perspective on cost and experience of moving to EMR is provided by Dr. Michelle Griever, a family physician in Ontario in her blog, Dr. Griever's EMR. The blog chronicles the process of choosing a vendor, implementing a system and the learning pains, rewards and benefits since the initial decision to move to an EMR in 2005.
Read Dr. Griever's entry The Cost of EMR.
- The general benefits of using an EMR are summarized in the following article:
50 Reasons to Buy an EMR

- We also suggest you read the Manitoba peer leader’s stories to see why they decided to implement an EMR and what they learned by doing so.
